Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook.
A new poll shows governor Craig Benson in a tight race for the corner office.
And for the first time since becoming governor, his approval rating has dropped below 50-percent.
The Granite State Poll shows 45-percent of New Hampshire adults say they approve of the job Benson has done as governor-- a more than 10-percent drop since April.
40-percent disapprove of his performance and 14-percent remain neutral.
There are two Democrats hoping to win their party's nod to challenge the governor. And they are virtually unknown to voters. Still, the poll showed potential challenger John Lynch within ten points and Paul McEachern within 13. That's the general election.
The poll did not measure Benson's matchup in the September 14 primary.
That's the focus of our NH Votes 2004 report. Richard Ager looks at Governor Craig Benson and his Republican opponent, Charles Tarbell.

Q MAJ CRAIG WIGGIN: This is part of a CALL UP under a "regional police agreement".
The New England State Police Administrators Conference.
I understand SECURITY has been increased at the Seabrook nuclear power plant as well -- in anticipation of the Democratic National convention.
?
Q Maj Wiggin: What should NH commuters heading south into Boston keep in mind next
week --what about the rest of us who may have to head in that direction?
Q An arbitratror has ruled in the city's constract dispute with Boston's Police Union -
but they're promising to picket welcoming parties for delegates on Sunday.
How worried are authorities that things might boil over?
Q What's being done to avoid huge backups on I-93 durng the DNC?
Q Electronic Message Boards are out giving
traffic advisories.
Q One survey found that 3 out of 4 boston residents were planning to get out of town during convention week. What kind of TRAFFIC situation are Police anticipating?
Q What about the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard -- is anything being done to
beef up security there?

QMAJ WIGGIN: Co-ordination of emergency personnel was a weakness immediately after 9-11 What's happened SINCE then to ensure -- a coordinated EMERGENCY response should disaster strike?
Q MAJ WIGGIN: What about here in NH? Are state emergency officials, hospitals and tow truckdrivers on alert here?
Q MAJ WIGGIN: Hospitals have done drills to prepare for emergencies -- Has there been any specialized training for TROOPERS?
Q MAJ WIGGIN: With the convention just days away --any message you want to leave with NH Residents as for as the security scene here and in nearby Boston?
We're in GOOD HANDS.
